Documentation as Code: When Documentation Becomes a Product

  • 40 min

Documentation rarely becomes a priority in products that are not API-first. At Bitrix24, changes started with it and affected DevRel processes and technologies. We abandoned closed legacy documentation, migrated content to Markdown, gathered it on Diplodoc, and opened a public repository. This turned documentation into “docs as code,” with pull requests, reviews, and automation.
An AI agent analyses source code and generates article drafts, which the documentation team refines to production quality. At the same time, we shifted the focus from method references to practical scenarios and guides. AI also helps translate content into English, enabling weekly updates. We measured the effectiveness of the new docs by comparing mentions in public developer chats with the old version.
This approach reshaped the technical writer’s role, integrated AI and the community into the process, and made documentation a catalyst for change in the company’s product DevRel.
