Tech Writer-Technologist or Lean Documentation Development

  • 40 min

The documentation development cycle is fundamentally similar to the production cycle of manufacturing products/parts on a factory floor.

When we receive a task in Jira, we prepare the document using the provided materials and inputs, and then deliver it to the end user.

In product development, the philosophy of lean manufacturing is often applied. We have integrated this philosophy into our documentation processes as well. In my presentation, I will talk about lean manufacturing—its principles and our experience in implementing it.

Like all business process participants, our goal is to deliver value. The result of our work is essentially divided into two parts: what creates value (for example, a completed document) and waste (which always exists) — everything else.

The goal of Lean development is to reduce waste while maintaining value, which is a desirable outcome for many. Whether Lean development is applicable to documentation—this is the question my presentation will address.
